In this part one tribute to director Werner Herzog, Aguirre, The Wrath of God stars Klaus Kinski as the eponymous 16th-century conquistador whose obsession with finding the fabled gold city of El Dorado drives his expedition into chaos and doom. Hypnotic and hallucinatory, it’s the defining work of Herzog’s early style.
