When Farmville citizens and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the posh new Hotel Weyanoke on May 7, 2018, it was an affair to remember. It was also a repeat performance.

- The Hotel Weyanoke first opened in 1925. As Farmville Mayor David Whitus recounted at the hotel’s recent grand re-opening, “when the original hotel opened, with train service east and west, Farmville became known as a convention center, and between 1926 and 1928, it hosted 10 statewide conventions.”
- When the hotel opened in 1925, Farmville held a parade that drew 2,500 people.
- The original hotel served a variety of guests over the years, including the author and lecturer Helen Keller.
- The hotel building was converted into a home for the elderly in the late 1980s and later became a residence hall for Longwood University sororities.
