Shallow depressions along the Appomattox River floodplain below High Bridge fill with water from winter rains creating vernal pools. These temporary habitats for amphibians and insects in the late winter and early spring provide a unique wetland home before drying up in the summer. Join a ranger as we hike below High Bridge to explore these natural wonders and try to identify some salamanders, frog eggs, or macroinvertebrates that we might see.
This program is conducted in accordance with Virginia Law; park staff possess the proper permits and training to collect and briefly handle wildlife. All ages are welcome. The round trip hike will be roughly one mile on uneven terrain. Please dress warmly and wear water resistant shoes.
