During the Civil War, Union soldiers were always ready for the challenges of marching, training, or engaging in battle. Carrying their personal belongings in knapsacks made of durable cotton or canvas, these packs, often referred to as “Soldier’s Trunks.” Designed to hold all the essentials for a soldier on the move, these knapsacks were a crucial part of their equipment.
Join a park ranger on an exploration of what these soldiers carried with them during the Appomattox Campaign. This pivotal moment in history saw both Union and Confederate forces passing through High Bridge Trail State Park, making it the perfect setting to delve into the experiences of these soldiers as they pursued Robert E. Lee’s army.
All interested visitors should meet in the Camp Paradise parking and be prepared to walk a short distance to Civil War era fortifications where the talk will occur. We look forward to seeing you all on the trail!
