Completely understanding the myriad complexities of ecology and how our actions affect the environment and the lives of living things therein is impossible. Even understanding a certain niche (a mere fraction of the whole) takes years of education and keen observation. Despite that, we owe it to our only home to do our best to learn about, advocate for, and protect what’s left of the natural world.
This Earth Day, join us on foot at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield as one of our rangers leads a forum-style educational tour of our largest trail loop. We will cover topics related to conservation, grassland and forest ecology, invasive species, and the ethics and legality of foraging in the state of Virginia. This walk will start at 10 a.m. and is not expected to go past noon. Participants are encouraged to prepare accordingly for a medium-length hike and the region’s given weather for the day. This includes comfortable clothes, hiking shoes, and plenty of water at the bare minimum but could expand to include suitable rain gear or sunscreen depending on the weather. There is no fee for attending the program or for parking.
Questions? Feel free to contact us! You can email us at SailorsCreek@dcr.virginia.gov or contact the Visitor Center at (804) 561-7510. Alternatively, you may email the ranger organizing this event at Joseph.Wendelin@dcr.virginia.gov. We hope to see you there!
