Felt has the unique ability to be made into almost any thickness, as long as the pressure, agitation and moisture is adequate. The Scandinavians made thick parkas and winter boots from it, the Mongolians had their horses drag huge rolls of wool across fields to create thick naturally waterproof and insulated walls for their yurt homes. Even their furniture was made from wool.

Some felting experience is recommended.

Here in Virginia, such thick, warm felt might be a bit much to wear, even in the winter. In this class, you’ll be learning to make a beautiful thin, colorful, lacy-but-warm Cobweb Felted Scarf large enough to drape around your neck or shoulders. You’ll choose your colors from a rich array of fibers, including merino wool, silk, camel and yak. Then you’ll carefully lay out your wool into patterns, and, very delicately, begin felting it. You’ll learn how to check, adjust, and tweak your work as you put it through a very controlled shrinking process. The outcome is always exciting, surprising, and always entirely unique.
