In a partnership program with High Bridge Trail, the Margaret Watson Bird Club will have volunteers available to share their knowledge during this birding adventure. Help our local bird club conduct a wild bird survey on a beautiful tract of park property. This kind of citizen science can be helpful to guide the direction of wildlife and habitat management. We will also improve the habitat by removing harmful debris from human activities.
Participants will meet at the Charley’s Parking Lot in Farmville at 8:30 a.m. From there we will travel to the Rochelle Tract, a locally unique ecosystem that has been marred by a few private dumping sites from years past. Please bring binoculars but they are not required. This program is enjoyable and informative for all knowledge and experience levels, including beginners, and any interested visitor is welcome. A minimal level of fitness is required due to uneven terrain, and some walking that will cover about 1.5 miles.
A very light cleanup will occur first. Years of working on this site has paid off, and the site is in very good shape, but we still find trash. Please wear suitable and durable clothing. Prepare for the weather, and have sturdy closed toe walking shoes. For more information, contact the High Bridge Trail State Park office at (434) 315-0457.
