Day 1
Friday, July 19, 2019 – Arrive in Farmville for a weekend of cycling the region. You can bring your own bikes or rent them for the weekend through Sandy River Outdoor Adventures where you’ll be staying.
Check in at the Heartland Regional Visitor Center at 121 East Third Street in Farmville (across from Macado’s) to pick up your passport and receive instructions on the Passport Program and prizes (one passport per family – restrictions may apply).
Check into Sandy River Outdoor Adventures and unpack in your tipi. You’re in for a full evening, so you’ll want to come back and snuggle up in your cozy glamping tipi. Prepare to be in awe. These tipis feature a kitchenette, full-size bathroom and even wi-fi.
Noon After tuning up your bikes and a little lunch with fresh veggies and eggs right at the farm, ride Monroe Church Road up to Rt 460, cross over to Aspen Hill Road and ride out to the High Bridge Trail State Park.
1:30 p.m. Meet the park ranger at High Bridge for an interpretive session on the history of High Bridge Trail State Park, then take a ride or walk down below the bridge. Once back on the trail, ride the 5.5 miles into Farmville. (Requires pre-registration. Contact the office at (434) 315-0457)
4 p.m. Take a left on the trail to head into downtown Farmville. At Third Street Brewing you can hitch your bike to the rack before sitting down for a flight or two. The games and free popcorn make it a kid friendly venue as well.
7 p.m. Pedal up to The Hotel Weyanoke for dinner at Effingham’s – enjoy artisan pizza from a coal fired oven and hearty sandwiches.
9 p.m. Take a relaxed ride back to your tipi for an evening around the campfire with other glampers. Maybe enjoy a dip in the saltwater swimming pool. If you bought a growler from Third Street Brewing, this is where you get to sit, relax and enjoy.
Bedtime.
Day 2
Saturday, July 20 – Breakfast in your tipi. Take a quick walk across the road and gather your own eggs and maybe some greens for a made-from-scratch omelette in your beautiful kitchen.
8 a.m. Time to really stretch your legs. You’re going to ride back towards Farmville by way of Camp Paradise Road. After crossing over River Road, watch for the signs to the Rochelle Tract Trails, four off-road trails that are part of the High Bridge Trail State Park that will challenge you with varying degrees of difficulty and mixed surfaces.
1 p.m. Ride into Farmville and swing by Uptown Coffee Café for a light lunch and a GREAT coffee bar.
2 p.m. Spend some time in Downtown Farmville – swing into The Outdoor Adventure Store to check out their bikes and accessories, Green Front Furniture, The Sleeping Bee, Mainly Clay, Amish Originals, Red Door 104, Kenny’s Health Foods Emporium, or any of the other wonderful, unique shops in and around Farmville.
4 p.m. Enjoy a 32-mile round trip ride to Pamplin at the end of High Bridge Trail State Park and then back to Farmville. It’s an easy ride on nearly all level crusher run.
6 p.m. Drive back to Main Street for The Virginia Tasting Cellar – a cozy and unique tasting cellar where you can enjoy wines from at least 8 regional wineries as well as cideries and meaderies.
8 p.m. Walk upstairs to Charley’s Waterfront Café for a full-service dinner on the deck overlooking the Appomattox River or dine in the air-conditioned dining room.
It’s a nice easy ride back to your tipi after a long day of finding fun in Farmville.
Day 3
Sunday, July 21 – 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wake up for one more day of interesting and fun things to do – perhaps you want to go to a local Church – Sandy River Outdoor Adventure staff will have given you the listings. Then, head over for Brunch at The Fishin’ Pig. Just a short drive south on Rt. 15.
1 p.m. Head over to the Sandy River Outdoor Adventure Park for an afternoon in the trees. Get ready to experience the largest aerial obstacle course and zip lines in Virginia.(Requires pre-registration)
As you check out of your tipi, drop your passport with the Adventure Park staff, or swing by the Heartland Regional Visitor Center on your way out. You can head for home, knowing you had a good introduction to what Farmville has to offer. But guess what? There will be ANOTHER weekend in September that’s being scheduled just for YOU!
