It’s that time of year when the air starts to feel warmer, and longer days mean lighter nights. This winter has been cold, but milder days are right around the corner. In the words of the old proverb: “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.”
This spring it’s time for a visit to your favorite small town: Farmville, Va.

Get Your Art On at Mainly Clay
Spring is the time to get those creative juices flowing! Grab your partner or friend and head down to Mainly Clay at 217 N. Main Street for their 10 a.m. handbuilding class. You’ll be rolling and stamping clay to build your very own unique creation — an adorable owl serving bowl! Mainly Clay instructors work with all skill levels, so whether this is your first time with your hands in clay or you’re a pro, your instructor will help you try out specific techniques, shape your own piece and select a glaze color. Three and a half weeks later, your fired serving bowl will be out of the kiln and ready to bring home. No better time to learn a new skill than at the start of a new season!
Meander Main Street
All that art building up an appetite? Early afternoon is the perfect time to explore Farmville’s downtown. Stroll along the storefronts. Grab a sandwich or latte at Uptown Coffee Cafe for a quick pick-me-up. Wander through Green Front Furniture’s revitalized tobacco warehouses or check out a few of the stops on Farmville’s Civil Rights Walking Tour.
Need a sweet treat? Our newest business, Cloud 9 Gelato, updates its menu regularly with new, fresh flavors. Biscotti, blood orange, butter pecan and coconut top the list now, but who knows what you’ll find as the seasons change?
Enjoy “Global Grub, Local Vibes” at North Street Press Club
As the day comes to a close, get ready to enjoy one of the top restaurants on the downtown scene, located in the former printing building for the Farmville Herald. North Street Press Club offers internationally inspired fare in a unique setting. Popular dishes include the pad thai and chicken tikka tacos as well as the array of gourmet burgers named for famous journalists. Check out the Robin Roberts — fried egg, bacon, avocado, American cheese and fig jam on Texas toast, anyone? Or try the Hunter S. Thompson — mushrooms, caramelized onions, and swiss topped with arugula and garlic aioli, yum! Grab a table or booth indoors to catch some live music or head out to the back patio to enjoy cushioned seating, twinkling lights and an early spring night. You’ll be full and satisfied when you head back to your hotel for a good night’s sleep.
Bike the Bridge!
On Sunday morning after your complimentary breakfast, check out of your room and head downtown to the The Outdoor Adventure Store at 318 N. Main Street. Make sure to grab your four bike vouchers and your curated snack box from Miller’s Country Store. For today’s adventure, you’ll want some fuel!
Located right on the High Bridge Trail, the Outdoor Adventure Store is the perfect place to set off on a trek through High Bridge Trail State Park. Pick up your two cruiser bike rentals for a little speed as you cycle to see this Virginia Historic Landmark. Only four and a half miles from downtown, the High Bridge spans the Appomattox River and is famous for being the longest recreational bridge in the Commonwealth. Enjoy the views from above the treetops as you sample the delicious goodies in your curated snack box from Miller’s Country Store. (Miller’s is known around Farmville for bulk foods, meats and cheeses, farm-fresh produce and homemade baked goods and preserves, so they’re sure to have packed you something delicious!)
Not up for such a long ride? No worries. There are plenty of scenic spots to enjoy your cruisers and snacks a bit closer to downtown.
When you’re ready to head back to Farmville, make sure to stop by the downtown LOVE sign for a final photo to remember your spring adventure in our vibrant town.
