From the twisty banks of the Blueway to mists drifting off Sandy River Reservoir, there’s a body of water for everyone in Farmville. Canoers, kayakers, paddle boarders and those who simply love the water are drawn to these unique spots. Farmville’s the perfect place to come for a day or a weekend of paddling paradise.
Read on to see three reasons why Farmville is perfect for paddlers.
1. The open water calls
For those who like a little elbow room on the water, Farmville area lakes offer room to roam and then some. First up is Wilck’s Lake, a 55-acre lake located in the heart of Farmville. The best part — you’ll be minutes from grabbing a delicious bite following your paddle. Briery Creek Lake just outside of town covers 845 acres and is located in the Briery Creek Wildlife Management area. You’re sure to spot some amazing birds or animals during your visit. Sandy River Reservoir is a 740-acre lake with a pier and ramp for canoers and boaters. Following your float you’ll be close to the High Bridge Trail if you feel up to a little more exercise.
2. The Blues (In the Best Way): The Farmville Blueway
This four-mile water trail begins on the east end of Wilck’s Lake and winds through the heart of Farmville. With intense portage points, this secluded trail eventually lets out at Riverside Park. It highlights important historical events. It passes by a Native American burial mound and retraces waterways that former slaves used to find freedom while working the river in bateaux. Following the Blueway, you’re pulled into an otherworldly silence with only the sound of your paddle, the water, and the forest around you. The Farmville Blueway is a paddler’s gem.
3. Paddlin’ the parks
If you don’t have a canoe, kayak or paddleboard of your own, local state parks are a great option for getting out on the water. Twin Lakes State Park, Holliday Lake State Park and Bear Creek Lake State Park all offer rental options. They have amazing lakes to be explored as well. Twin Lakes is actually two lakes, both available to boaters.
