The common practice of “tagging” individuals with nicknames has been around since the beginning of time. History is filled with colorful, comical, degrading and demeaning examples. The American Civil War was no different. Nicknames stuck to popular figures for a variety of reasons such as great victories, humiliating defeats, personality traits, physical features, etc. by their own troops, their enemies, the media, politicians and old classmates from West Point.
We will explore and share the origins and back stories from a selection of the most noteworthy nicknames that provides a lighter side, often humorous view of the brutal conflict that produced so many larger-than-life characters. This family-friendly program is FREE to the public and will take place indoors at the Visitor Center Museum. For questions, please contact the Visitor Center at 804-561-7510.
