Farmville’s Public Painted Murals

Local artists and students have been “painting the town” in the Downtown Farmville area, bringing a pop of color and vibrancy to the city streets. Check out the following murals, spread across Farmville, for a bit of creative inspiration, even a fantastic backdrop for a picture with friends and family! #ToFarmville

Tryptich Mural – Located on one wall of a storage warehouse where the Farmville Farmer’s Market is located, you’ll find artist Monty Montgomery’s Warehouse Tryptich Mural Project, which features a variety of colors and geometric shapes. Montgomery is a proud Longwood University graduate and an admired local talent. The mural is broken up into three pieces, with the impressive dimensions of 90’x20’!

Moton Museum Mural – Farmville’s famed Robert Russa Moton Museum features a modern mural of a tarpaper shack that existed in 1951! The Moton Museum, which was formerly a high school, is now a historic site known as the student birthplace of America’s Civil Rights Moment for its role in providing a majority of the plaintiffs in the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education case. Funds for the project came from the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission and the Virginia Department of Transportation Enhancement Program.

Eastern Rays – In the Bedford Art Building at Longwood University you’ll find another mural by artist Monty Montgomery. This mural, 45’ x 13’, brightens the hallway in the Bedford Art Building. The piece is uplifting and inspirational to students passing through!

The Student Artist Mural Project – Farmville local Carley Fetty and a group of students from Prince Edward County Middle School have recently completed a mural outside of the J Fergeson Gallery on Main Street. The mural, the first of a series, is part of the Student Artist Mural Project, an idea Fetty launched at the 2017 Downtown Farmville Supporting Outstanding Urban Projects (SOUP) event that offers grants to proposed projects benefiting the community.

Monument #42 – At the entrance of Longwood University’s Dorrill Dining Hall is an additional mural by artist Monty Montgomery, titled “Monument #42.” The mural is part of his nature series: “Basically I take photographs and then sketches from when I’m, you know, sitting in the park,” Montgomery said, “There’s a lot of geometry. It’s really an interesting nature world.”

Fractal Series – Through the main entrance, from Brock Commons into Dorrill Dining Hall, you’ll find Monty Montgomery’s “Fractal Series.” Montgomery recently updated the mural with a few color changes. It is available for viewing now!

Live Mural – Monty Montgomery will be doing a “live” four-day mural during the Virginia Children’s Book Festival, which will be taking place at Longwood University from October 19-21. Watching Montgomery live in action is truly a treat, as he has brought an abundance of incredible art and color to Farmville!
