It all began with an idea. In a region where one in five adults is functionally illiterate, how could we make change? The VCBF was created to inspire kids to WANT to read, and to make reading accessible to every child, regardless of circumstance. We want every child to see themselves and others in books, and to become readers for their entire lives. In 2023, VCBF was a Library of Congress Literacy Award Winner.
The Virginia Children’s Book Festival is an annual free opportunity for local K-12 students to meet acclaimed Children’s book authors. Longwood will host the three-day festival October 16-18. Sessions will occur all over campus including Greenwood Library, Maugans, Jarman, and more. Longwood students are encouraged to volunteer for the festival and even attend the sessions as space and schedules allow.
