Friday: Tipis and Tastings
What better way to commune with nature than Sandy River Outdoor Adventures’ glamping tipis? When you arrive Friday evening, check into your tipi. You’ll discover a touch of luxury, plus hotel-grade comforts like AC, high-speed wireless internet and a stocked kitchenette. Step out the door for a stunning view of Virginia’s heartland. Gather around your own private fire pit to relax in Adirondack chairs. Then before bed, follow the path to Sandy River Distillery just across the road. Sip finely crafted spirits on the covered patio as you toast to the weekend ahead. Hoping to catch live music? Make sure to check out the events schedule when planning your trip!
Saturday: Paddles, Picnics and Panoramas in Farmville
Start your Saturday morning with a leisurely cup of coffee and farm fresh eggs. Then head into town to check out the paddling gear at Appomattox River Company. This family-owned and operated kayak outfitter keeps a healthy stock of boats, standup paddleboards, gear and apparel — perfect for a water adventure later at Twin Lakes State Park. If cycling is more your speed, swing by The Outdoor Adventure Store for everything from bikes to accessories. While you’re downtown, don’t miss the Farmville Community Marketplace. Just a block from your gear stop, this lively farmers market features fresh produce, artisan crafts and home-baked goods.
After getting your gear on, head to Miller’s Country Store to assemble the perfect picnic lunch. Opt for one of their standout sandwiches (check the daily specials!), pair it with a fresh-brewed iced tea and a green salad, and treat yourself to a home-baked cookie — Mrs. Miller’s ginger cookies are a local favorite!
Spend the rest of the day unwinding at Twin Lakes State Park. Relax on the shores of Goodwin Lake. Then take a swim and dine al fresco at a shaded picnic spot. Visit the discovery center to meet honorary ranger, Myrtle the turtle. Rent a rowboat, kayak or paddle boat and float the afternoon away. Enjoy an easy, scenic stroll around Goodwin Lake before heading back to Farmville.
Finish the night with an aerial view of Farmville at Hotel Weyanoke’s Catbird Rooftop Terrace. Enjoy the best panorama in town as you sip on craft beer, signature cocktails or a glass of wine. Choose from shared plates like harissa wings, honey truffle fries or a woodfired pizza. End your evening on a sweet note with banana zeppole (or another scrumptious dessert) before returning to your tipi for a restful night under the stars.
Sunday: Pancakes to Pedals
On your last morning in Farmville, start with a classic breakfast at Walker’s Diner — a historic valentine diner and piece of 1950s Americana set right in Downtown Farmville. Grab a seat outdoors and fill up on hot coffee, stacks of pancakes, bacon, eggs and biscuits.
Next, stroll across the street to The Outdoor Adventure Store and pick up a bike rental. (Make sure to reserve your rental ahead of time online!) From tandem bikes to electric trikes — and everything in between — you’ll be able to find the perfect fit for your family. Then hop on the trail at High Bridge Trail State Park just next door. Bike the 4.5 miles to the famed High Bridge for stunning views of the Appomattox River from 125 feet above.
